  Abstract. In the mids, Chicana authors Margarita Cota-Cárdenas and Gloria Anzaldúa each published their signature works, Cota-Cárdenas’s Puppet: A Chicano Novella in and Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza in Both texts project the possibility of an openly bilingual literary poetics and feature semi-autobiographical narrative . her first novel, Puppet: A Chicano Novella. Within the corpus of Chicano lit-erature, Puppet constitutes one of the first novels published in Spanish since the emergence of the Chicano Movement of the s. Given the lack of interest from mainstream editorial houses in the United States and abroad, Puppet was published by Relámpago Book Press.

In the novella You Must Fight Them, a short, bookish half-Mexican doctoral student returns to his hometown of Woodland, California, and tries to reconnect with Lupita Valdez, the girl he worshipped in high in order to date Lupita, he must first fight her three hulking brothers.
